M101
A Whales tooth with American Scrimshaw Decoration. One side depicts a young lady wearing a long dress and a bonnet, holding a posie of flowers, the other side has an American Eagle with a banner in its beak bearing the motto “E. PLURIBUS UNUM”, the eagle is surrounded by early type American flags, a shield, a cannon, a drum and lances. There is a rope border separating the two depictions and an anchor is separated from the American armorial by a floral border which circles the tip of the tooth. This tooth is very old, faded, mellow, yellow color with some minor age cracks. The scrimshaw work is also old and very well done, but naïve. 5 ½” long, 2 ½” wide at widest point. This is a fabulous piece of Americana. Circa 1830.
